Making Painful Decisions

The act of making painful decision is part of entering the territory of adulthood. It cannot be avoided. Mothers do it repeatedly in their relationships with their children. Many have looked into the pain-drooped eyes of their little boy or girl to whom they had to say no and mean it.Some have made the painful decision of walking away from marriages that were killing them, or left jobs they enjoyed because  the boss thought he was God's gift to women and must hump everyone who wore a skirt in his office. But who says life is supposed to be easy and making decisions is always supposed to be  a walk in the park?
Humans have survived on this planet, not because it is all that conducive to human survival, but because we are adaptable and more capable of handling change than we give ourselves credit for. We are very good at managing change, which at first is disruptive and often frightening, as the crucial moments immediately preceding and after making such decision is encountered. But the painful moment passes, and we awake on the other side of our decision to the realization that life goes on, experience is acquired, fresh coping mechanisms are adopted, new levels are attained, and pretty soon we find ourselves wondering why in the world we remained so long in the thing that was killing us, and how much further we might have gone had we been bolder.
Bold decision making does not always require leaving or walking away. There are times when the bold thing to do is remain, and the cowardly thing to do is walk away. This is precisely why decision making is not an easy thing to do either way.
One thing is for certain. Whatever difficult decision one is compelled to make, survival is going to rely on proper timing and adequate preparation. It is possible to make right decisions at the wrong time and without adequate preparation. Taking caution is crucial, and a good dose of realism is essential, but even when we have made decisions without consideration of  these matters, humans are so adaptable, and  with flexibility, determination, ambition and a plan for personal improvement ,the least prepared among us at crucial decision making moment, will still thrive.
