Across the Caribbean young men are being shot down like insects. Handsome, tall, healthy, talented, skilled and intelligent young men whom women love. They are humorous, hopeful and filled with potential but are being shot down like things of no value. In fact the people who shoot them down must first see them as things of no value. This is why they make statements such as "He is a pussy!", "Let's get that pussy!". It is not much different from nations referring to those they must bomb or snipe as "Gorillas", as was practiced in the 1960s and "insurgents" or "terrorists" as they do today.
But what does the church have to do with all of this?
The church, whether we believe its teachings or not, has for thousands of years influenced the behaviors and shaped the consciousness of the western world in particular. There is no institution among westerners that has touched the consciences and swung the behaviors of more people than the church has done. The tender, gentle, soothing, assuring tones and voices of priests and ministers have made big men weep in deep contrition. Priests and preachers hold more secrets for bad men and women than leaders of any other institution ever established in this area of the globe.
The church is allowing this influence and power to slip away from its grasp. It is probably already too late but I doubt it.
Today the church puts bars across its windows and alarm systems at its doors. It hires security guards to watch its property, shuts up its doors and air conditions its cushioned seats- which are often among the central sources of its pride.
The church is no longer able to make big men weep in contrition, weep streams of tears absorbed into the garments of the men of the cloth. Ministers of the gospel cruise the streets avoiding the ghettos in their sleek machines, their windows sealed against the seething air. They have sufficient wool- of-sheep in their folds to keep their gas tanks full.
They read in the papers of another youth shot down in cold blood on the street and wonder if they should request the presence of law enforcement officers at his funeral.
