Neither Kittitians ( yes we are called Kittitians , not Kittens--- kit---ish----ans) nor Nevisians have ever seen the relics of war. One American President brought war to the shores of our neighbors in our recent history, but we only heard of it. We only heard of Blackhawks or some other types of helicopters and of marines tramping the streets of Grenada during the overthrow of The Maurice Bishop Administration, but nothing like this has ever happened on St. Kitts and Nevis, and we don't believe it will. Every time I read Martin Carter's "This is the Dark Time my Love" I shiver because I don't want anything like that to happen here. I doubt it will, because we are docile and very peaceful people over here.
We have never awakened to find a blown-off human leg on our veranda. We drink water- just so- from the standpipes, some of which still dot our avenues, and we don't get diarrhea from doing so. Our shops are always open; especially since the non-stop-working Chinese have landed, and no dead body in army uniform is going to float up beside our little girl slashing about on Owalli Beach.
I want us to keep it so.
With all the talk of political protestation and stepping up of the pressure nothing more will happen than a few people perhaps being symbolically given a drive in a police bus ( used to be vans once) to a distance that they could well have walked ( yes we like driving to places well within walking distances) but nothing more than that is going to happen here, because this is who we are and it is a good thing.
We think things that are not serious are quite serious . I hear the Africans living here say repeatedly that St. Kitts and Nevis is a peaceful place. They know what they are talking about. This is why we can afford to have a million radio stations and people asking rhetorical questions at political meeting to rile up the emotions of people who feel like they want to do bad things until they go home and hear their child say "daddy", or look in on their baby girl fast asleep on a well-kept, flower-sheeted bed in a toy-stacked bedroom.
We are not bad people. It is just that some people make us angry sometimes, and make us feel like we want to do something bad for a few seconds..... until the baked chicken comes out and we revert to our normal, peaceful selves after all that riling up at the meeting.
