Christians are Becoming Nicer

Like everything on the planet humans experience change, and when humans go through changes the institutions we are part of go through these change with us. The Christian faith is absolutely no different.Christianity is a human institution employed by humans for a vast variety of psychological, social, emotional and even spiritual reasons, and, like all things used by humanity, it must change as humans change, or it will become obsolete. It is therefore no surprise that Christianity has, and will, continue to shift its tenants.
Regardless of what people say about the awful nature of the human being, most of us are innately good and want everything around us to become better and less painful, we need tasks to become more easily accomplished, and most of all, we want to feel happy and well.
During the 1940's and 50's, a woman wearing trousers ( pants) in circles of Christianity was considered to be committing a "sin" until Christians became better thinkers, and now wearing  trousers, among most Christians in the Caribbean, is rather the sensible thing to do. The list of things that were once "sins" and  are "sins" no more is long and growing longer with every passing generations of Christians. We can safely predict where Christianity will in its list of "no longer sins" in 50 years, although  many of us won't be here to witness it.
Recently a man stopped me on the street and complained to me that his pastor had pointed his finger at him during one of his sermons and bellowed that he (the complaining man) was a homosexual and was on his way to a burning hell. That type of badness on the part of ministers is old-school and is dying away, simply because such behaviors are not of the nicer quality, and Christianity is growing up. The days when the congregation would have bellowed "AMEN HALLELUJAH", and old sister Maude Vanlow would have shot to her feet, done a few switches of her fan in her hand and shrieked "YES REVEREND, PREACH THE WORD!" are eternally gone. The increasing population of informed now part of the church are more likely to think the dear reverend disrespectful, has gone mad or at least has become insensitive.
A few days ago I was at a poetry reading sessions at which one of our island's brightest and most amazing young Christian writers read a piece of amazing work. There was no greater evidence of where Christianity has gone and is going than when our poet, a known, respected, brilliant and sensible Christian blew us all away with a riveting poems consisting of no fewer than fifty words beginning with the letter "F". Some may say the poet could not be a Christian, but dared any among us at that event express such an opinion, others would have either audibly or mentally wondered, "But who are we to judge?"
