In a world of strife, war, vicious tempers, and in which the slightest provocation might readily end in murder, who would not want the sweet sound of unity? It is like the rumble of thunder after a long, dry spell of a scorching drought. The sound of unity seems like springs in an arid desert. But is it as easy as it sounds?
In the Caribbean, political elections are costly battles, supporters are fierce in their opposition of one party or another, and they take things seriously.
The futures of the children of thousands of mothers are in the ballots cast for one party or the next. How could that not be a serious matter, especially when party politics is, in essence, nothing more than tribal wars in which the loser is sentences to five or more years of barrenness, depending on the severity of the campaign he or she mounted against the elected. They may as well have been banished to nothingness, because this is what some victorious parties do to voters who do not vote for them, especially when they are known, recognized and identified vocal, t-shirt-wearing, banner waving, front row, horn-blower of the party that lost the election. It takes a type of mental gymnastic to leap from that type of heat to that type of united coolness.
And what of the history of the parties involved in the formulation of oneness?
For the five years that unity reigns, will any bold mention be made of any separate, individually-distinct, real-world, registered and paid-up-for-party, to which card-carrying members belong, and have belonged for generations; having its own registered name, own dreams, own separate aspirations, and after generations of being a- having-its- own self-identity, party, or would the name, the logos, the distinct identifying colors, the good but separate philosophy and ideology, for the sake of unity, be willingly submerged over that long five year period?
What of the campaigning season for the second five year term after the first five united years? Will that campaign be for another five years, over which the individual, separate and distinct party, accustomed historically to its individual distinctiveness, be willing to tolerate relegation to the shadows of the unity thrust, with its blazing unity symbolisms, and this despite the historical separateness of identity which really does matters to any party worthy of the name?
You see, people have spent sleepless nights, suffered grave losses, made painful sacrifices and have been thrown into smelly jail cells for these things. So am just asking.
