I have decided that I am not writing any more long blogs. From now on my blogs are going to be quite short.
Today I will discuss attempts by politics to wrap itself in religious cloth and wear a collar. You know the white thing that circles the neck of men of the cloth? That is what a collar is. The thing that Ministers of the Christian religion wear when they are preparing to play roles of major significance wherever Christianity abounds.
Religion is crucially valuable to the buoyancy of the psyche of Caribbean people, but we cannot permit ourselves to turn prayers into daggers.
I am reminded of the church trip to the house of a wealthy member. Two young men in the church who did not think well of each other, one known as Sticky and the other with the nickname of Pointy, were ask to lead in a word of prayer. Pointy prayed first: "Lord," he said, "remember Sticky. You know he is a thief, Lord. You know he can't see other people's belongings and leave them alone. Lord. You know he is a big, stinking thief, Lord.....
When he had finished his prayer, it was Stick's turn to pray. Sticky began: Lord, Pointy? Big mouth Pointy? Ugly, bigmouth, buckteeth, stinking mouth Pointy.....? "
Sometimes in the Caribbean people turn to religion to help them legitimize nasty games.
